Teenage Cancer Trust

The Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) is a UK based charity which is devoted to improving the lives of teenagers and young adults with cancer. They focuses on the needs of teenagers and young adults with cancer, leukemia, Hodgkin’s and related diseases by providing specialist teenage units in hospitals.

This charity is supported by Wolfmother and Devendra Banhart.

Devendra Banhart has always wanted to support children, especially those in need. Maybe that because he ‘feels just like a child’!

Road Recovery

Through mentoring, educational and live performance based-programs, Road Recovery helps young people find their way towards a healthy future. RR is comprised of entertainment industry professionals whose lives have been touched by addiction and other adversities and now wish to make a positive impact on the lives of others.

This charity is supported by Shara Worden (A.K.A. My Brightest Diamond).

Shara has known members of the executive board of Road Recovery for many years and believes in their work, so she felt great about supporting them!

The Elliott Smith Memorial Fund

Raises money for Free Arts for Abused Children, which is a national non-profit organization that integrates the healing and therapeutic power of the arts into the lives of children and youth who have been abused.

Elliott’s sister Ashley told YBP that one thing her brother always wanted to do was start a charity for abused children, and so after he passed away she started this fund in his memory.

This charity is supported by Rilo Kiley, who were all good friends with Elliott.

Acoustic Neuroma Association of Canada

The Acoustic Neuroma Association of Canada is a patient-headed, peer support group. Their mandate is to:

  • Provide support and information to individuals who have experienced acoustic neuromas
  • Educate the public regarding symptoms suggestive of acoustic neuromas, thus promoting early diagnosis and consequent successful treatment
  • Furnish information on patient rehabilitation to physicians and health care personnel interested in the treatment of benign tumors and the alleviation of post-surgical problems
  • Promote and facilitate research into the causes and treatment of acoustic neuroma
An acoustic neuroma is a benign tumour which manifests itself on the sheath surrounding the eighth cranial nerve, affecting the functions of the inner ear. ANAC is supported by Hayden.


Amnesty International

Amnesty International (AI) is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights. It works to mobilize public opinion which exerts pressure on those who perpetrate abuses.

Their emblem below is a reflection of their mantra, which is based on the proverb, �Better to light a candle then to curse the darkness.

MercyCorps works amid disasters, conflicts, chronic poverty and instability to unleash the potential of people who can win against nearly impossible odds. Joseph Arthur recorded a special version of his song �In the Sun� with R.E.M.�s lead singer Micheal Stipe, to raise money for the In the Sun Foundation, a project launched by Stipe in response to the ongoing hardship experienced by thousands of residents of the Gulf Coast.

Art for Change encourages the advancement of progressive social change by using art as a catalyst for disseminating information to people.

Art for Change is supported by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

With limited funds and resources, this charity was built by consistently relying on the power of collaboration. The staff and volunteers found creative ways to maximize all available resources. This reflects the same DIY approach taken by CYHSY, who have created music it and released it on their own, by any means necessary.

Le Cha�non

Le Cha�non is women�s shelter, located in downtown Montreal. They provide food, shelter, clothing, and security.

Marie-Helene Houle, director of Le Cha�non explained to YBP that right now they are short on food reserves in their eatery, so with $ 1 000 they can stock up and continue to give their residents nutritious food, so our efforts are very much appreciated.

Transportation Alternatives

Transportation Alternatives is a 5500-member NYC-area non-profit citizens group working for better bicycling, walking and public transit, and fewer cars. They work for safer, calmer streets and car-free parks.

Transportation Alternatives is supported by Au Revoir Simone.

Annie Hart, a member of the keyboarding trio used to work there, and is proud to be supporting such an important cause.

 


The Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy is an organization which works around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people. Their mission is 'to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive'. With over 1 million members, they operate more than 100 marine conservation projects around the globe.

The Nature Conservancy is supported by The Shins.

 


Glass Casters Union

Glass Casters Union are a non-profit organization based in Eugene Oregon. Similar to the Yellow Bird Project, they make limited edition recycled glass ornaments, which are based on designs by indie artists, such as Band of Horses, Menomena, and Of Montreal. All of their profits go back to into their local community in the form of assistance for homeless and low-income people through emergency services, housing, jobs, training, and other charitable endeavours.

This charity is supported by Wolf Parade. Their glass ornament design has been used for a Yellow Bird Project t-shirt with permission from the band.


Safe Space

Safe Space is a New York based charity, which works with disadvantaged families and children to prevent foster care placement, and allow children the opportunity to grow up and live a safe and healthy life.  They do this by working closely with over 20,000 families across NYC, and offering programs and services which serve to strengthen them, and promote self-sufficiency.   

This charity is supported by The National.

Lake Ontario Waterkeeper

Lake Ontario Waterkeeper is an environmental justice organization working to win back the right to swim, drink, and fish in every waterway. Some of their mandates include constant waterfront monitoring to win back polluted beaches, and educating the public about threats to clean water and the tools available to protect communities. They are a collective of over 150 water programs worldwide.

They collaborated with fame producer Chris Brown to produce ‘At the Barricades: Volume 1’, which is a music compilation that was assembled and released to raise awareness of Lake Ontario Waterkeeper initiative.

ALS Society of BC

ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease) is a devastating neurodegenerative disease, which causes degeneration of the upper and lower motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, resulting in progressive paralysis due to degeneration of the upper and lower motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. Eighty per cent of people with ALS die within two to five years of diagnosis, with the inability to breathe or swallow. The ALS Society’s mandate is to:

  • Support research towards a cure for ALS
  • Support provincial ALS societies in their provision of quality care for persons living with ALS
  • Build public awareness of ALS and its impact.
